Jesus! Our Immanuel!

December 25th, 2013

Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate deity!
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus! Our Immanuel!

Immanuel,

God with us.

What does God with us look like?

This year I’m the adoptive mom of a child with severe disabilities.

This year I get it more than I ever have before.

What does the incarnation look like?

What does it look like for Jesus to be veiled in flesh?

The real incarnation was not cute, trendy, easy, simple, or fun.

You wouldn’t be able to find it on Pinterest and it wouldn’t get likes on Facebook.

God with us.

It looks uninviting.

Messy.

Earthy.

Crude.

Indelicate.

It looks like our worst fears.

Confusing.

Complicated.

Traumatic.

Risky.

It looks hard.

Demanding.

Unrelenting.

Exhausting.

Grueling.

It looks like an outcast.

Undignified.

Conspicuous.

Unseemly.

Ignominious.

It looks like a sacrifice.

Distress.

Abandonment.

Agony.

Death.

God with us.

Down on our level, getting His hands dirty, wearing Himself out, giving up His life so we could have life.

Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things,

that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage,

For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.

God with us.

With the eyes of faith,

It looks like willing obedience.

It looks like real love.

It looks like our greatest hope!

Mild He lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die;
Born to raise the sons of earth;
Born to give them second birth.

If this child who now lies before the eyes of your faith, wrapped in swaddling clothes in Bethlehem’s manger, is born to you, my hearer, then you are born again!

For this child is not born to you unless you are born to this child. ~Charles H. Spurgeon
