Adoption update: Big news!

December 27th, 2012

An adoption from Tommy’s country [let the reader read between the lines, and understand] requires two trips.

The first trip is for at least one parent to establish contact and officially accept the referral of their particular child or children.

The second trip is typically four to six months after the first trip and is basically to pick up their child or children and bring them home.

In order for Tommy to be safe, I have to be back from the first trip and send in our second stage documents by the time he turns 16 years old near the beginning of March.  Knowing that his government takes a holiday over Christmas and not much happens into the middle of January, and knowing how long many adoptive families have had to wait for one particular official signature, it was beginning to look like we might be cutting it far closer than we had guessed at the outset.

I was just beginning to ask the question–

“Now Susanna, are you truly resting in God for the timing of this adoption, or were you just feeling peaceful because everything has been moving along quickly?”

–and then, this morning, we received The Email!

“Congrats! Official referral received and it’s time to travel! Please review the email below and let’s start arranging your trip!”

Our sights are now set on having me ready to fly next Saturday, January 5th, to arrive in Tommy’s country the next day, Sunday, January 6th!

NOTE #1)  If you are a parent who is currently in the process of adopting from Tommy’s orphanage, and you would like me to ask permission to visit your child(ren), please email me at with your child(ren)’s full birth name(s).  And pray that God opens every door before me and the physical therapist who is traveling with me, and grants us far more than that request!

NOTE #2)  We will also be taking a monetary donation for Tommy’s orphanage, to be used for basic supplies like diapers, diaper cream, wipes, and formula.  If you would like to be part of that donation, or have notes for me to take for the director of his orphanage, please have them here to our house by next Thursday, January 3rd at the very latest.  Please write the name of his orphanage in the memo line of your check, to keep this fund separate from Tommy’s adoption fund.  Thank you so much, friends!

NOTE #3)  Because of plans we had already made for the time between now and next Saturday when I leave, my time will be extremely full!  Other than urgent emails or emails directly regarding this trip, I may or may not be able to reply before I return and get over the pregnancy-compounded jet lag and put the household back in order.  Thank you so much, everyone, for understanding!  I know you do!

NOTE #4)  If you are an adoptive parent who will be traveling where I am when I am, I would dearly love to meet you if at all possible!  Please let me know and we will see what can be worked out!

I have a very long prayer list for this upcoming trip, which I cannot spell out here for obvious reasons.

There is so much more I would say if it was allowed.  My heart is so full that if I open my mouth to talk about it, I begin to cry instead.  I cannot describe how incredibly loving and supportive you have been toward us and Tommy, and what it has meant to us.  Thank you!  Thank you for the prayers we know will be prayed over this whole trip!  We love you all!

Tommy, here we come!

    Congratulations Musser family!
I also wanted to mention a video I saw on you tube that I thought you might enjoy. It is called ace and Archie and was made for World Down Syndrome day (posted by the Ronald McDonald house of NC). The sweet love between siblings and the country Archie was adopted from made me think of your family.
Praying for a safe trip and lots of love for sweet Tommy!

  25. Susanna says:

    Thank you, Cecilia!

  26. Hannah says:

I just got chill bumps down my body.  Praise the Lord for He is good!! Hang on little guy, mama is coming!

  27. Melinda says:

I’m so happy to hear this news!  I can’t help but think that there is something significant in the timing, that you will be arriving there on Epiphany.  That was the day that another small group of travelers were led by the Lord to another small boy, born in the most humble of circumstances.  I wish you safe travels and can’t wait to hear all about it after you return!

  28. Anna T says:

Dearest Susanna,  I know that you are busy with preparing to travel this week — yea!!  I am praying for you as God is in ALL of the details as you get ready.  Would you kindly provide the orphanage director’s name?  Many thanks,  Anna

  29. Susanna says:

Anna, thank you for asking! Since we’re not supposed to tell where Tommy is, we can’t put her name into this post, but I’ll email you and add a link here to a post that has her name in it: Thank you for praying, too, Anna! God is working!

  30. Anna T says:

Many thanks…notes going out in the mail tomorrow!  I also replied via e-mail.  Love and blessings to you and YEA, God CAN and IS moving mountains!!  Anna
