This message is from Joe

November 24th, 2011

Dear friends,

Due to the sporadic nature of the internet connection in Katie’s hospital room as well as Susanna’s need to stay near Katie during her waking hours (Katie’s sleeping 4-6 hours out of 24), it has been impossible for her to reply by email to your generous offers of support.  What little time Susanna does have at the computer (if it happens to be connected to the internet at those times) has been used to update the blog.

Thank you to those of you who have donated to Katie’s care fund–until it becomes possible to send you a real thank you note, please know that we are very grateful for what you have shared!

Thank you to those of you who have offered to help in any way–we are grateful for your willingness to serve!

Thank you for continuing your encouragement of Susanna.

Would you please consider calling her on her cell phone–it has a consistent signal and can be carried to Katie’s bedside.  If you call and she is unable to answer, she will call you back.  Click the “Email Us” link on the right side of the blog or send an email to and ask for Susanna’s cell phone number–one of us at home will be happy to provide it for you.  She would love to hear from you and it would really minister to her.

PS. Our family had such an enjoyable Thanksgiving Day thanks to the Boroughs family who hosted us in their home for a delicious Thanksgiving dinner, Amy Peterson who stayed with Katie while Susanna was gone, and many ladies from Trish Jamison’s church who supplied us with an array of excellent desserts!  Thank you, Boroughs, we loved meeting you!

  1. Joe and Susanna you are the most thoughtful people I know.  Even in the midst of giving so much to Katerina you continue to care about thoae who are waiting in blogland to read an update.  I don’t know your family personally but would love the opportunity to be an encouragemnet to Susanna as she loves her child daily!

    Bless you!

Thank you, Susanna and Joe, for being so diligent in keeping us updated!  Thank you for sharing this incredible story of survival and love with the rest of us!  Happy Thanksgiving to you all!  Love, Laura

  3. Deanna says:

Praying for the Lord’s strength for Susanna to stay healthy and strong during this time…
    Thanks for the update!
We are thrilled to see what the Lord is doing!

An idea… If we, instead of asking for susanna’s cell, instead email you ours, then she can call when it’s convenient for her. I would hate to interrupt a doctor’s consultation or even a 15 minute power nap. Thank you, Joe, for updating us all. I’m going to email you with my phone number right now. But please tell Susanna, if she doesn’t find time or energy to call, don’t worry. We all know she is using all her energy and love to do the most important work….

I think we all love the updates. But I (and I bet everyone else here) fully understand that they might be scarse now. Nevermind us -the readers! Everyone will understand that the blog isn’t exactly what’s important right now.
I am just soooo happy that you are finally home (in the U.S at least) with her. I pray for your family and Katie the first thing I do in the morning and the last thing I do in the evening.
    Love from Anna in Sweden

While we are all checking back here multiple times a day (we don’t want to miss a post), we TOTALLY understand that Susanna is a *little* busy right now. :)  Please give her our love!!  Joe, do you know how long Katie is expected to be in the hospital?  I ask on behalf of people who want to send care packages… ;)

  7. Robin says:

Thank you so much for all the wonderful updates.  I, too, am so excited to read about Katie and her progress.  Praying!!!

  8. Jane says:

I echo everyone else’s sentiments…take care of yourselves first and foremost…a strong momma, papa, and family system will help Katie get stronger.
Much love to beautiful Katie and you all on this Friday.

  9. Susan says:

A package is on its way to Miss Katie as of earlier today – it should arrive at CHOP on Monday. I hope the contents will be “right” for her.

Please don’t trouble yourselves with updates – I think all of Katie’s many friends understand how very busy things are just now. Perhaps she’ll be sleeping more soon, so Susanna also can catch up.

What good new friends to share Thanksgiving with your family yesterday! That obviously added to everyone’s joy all-around. Katie’s story is leading to so much good.

It’s also good to realize my prayers for Katie are becoming prayers of thanksgiving as she begins to heal and little signs of her true personality begin to emerge.  Many thanks to and prayers of gratitude for all of those who’ve helped Katie heal, especially to her family and to her caregivers at CHOP and along her complicated way home over these last eventful two weeks.

Have a good weekend, with events only of the very best kind!

  10. Anna T says:

You are often in my thoughts and prayers!!  Happy (belated) Thanksgiving, we have so much to be thankful for!!  ((Hugs)) and love,  Anna

  11. Shelly says:

Happy First Thanksgiving as a family of 13!

  12. Jane says:

Sending love to you as this Friday ends and Saturday begins.  Katie’s first full week in America is coming to a close.  Much love to all you Mussers and thanks to the staff caring for you.

  13. Awesome updates!  So happy and thrilled to see Katie looking so different already!  She is so beautiful!  Praising God with you!  And hopes and prayer for some quick but good rest for Susanna.
    Hugs from Alberta!

Hi Susanna and Joe,  It was nice to hear that you had a wondeful Thanksgiving  your friends house.  I am so happy to know that so many people have come forward to help you guys.  You deserve so much. Love Katie’s pictures.  Please tell those nurses that another nurse (also pediatric ICU nurse) says thank you so much for what they are doing for Katie and they are also in my prayers.  Long Hug xxx

I wish you could hear all the oooohs and ahhhwwws from all of us as we gather around the computer and soak in all the photos that you post!  We are thrilled to watch sweet Katie literally bloom under your loving care.  Our family is praying for you all daily.  We are honored to participate in this great work He is doing.
