Behold, she speaks!

September 15th, 2011

Bright and early yesterday morning, Verity met a new friend.  This one will help her learn to speak properly.  By the time Miss Julie left our home, we were all invigorated and eager for our next visit.

Yes, it looks like we are blessed with another outstanding therapist!

Somehow, we ended up spending most of the two hours talking about the story of what God is doing in Katie’s adoption.  Seems to be happening wherever I find ears to hear, even in Jo-Ann Fabrics.  So Miss Julie said this visit will count as a “free” session, and we’ll add in another one soon.

We did chat a little about Verity’s speech skills, though!  Miss Julie observed, asked some questions and jotted down my answers.  She made me very glad indeed by explaining that what I have been doing with Verity from the beginning was exactly what she would have wanted me to do.

So.

Verity Joy, youngest member of our chatterbox family.

Not only does she jabber with great expression, but she readily attempts to mimic us, she attempts to say more real words all the time, she uses them appropriately, and–marvel of marvels–she can whisper.  Yes, whisper.

And now she is beginning to put words together.

I was so sure you wouldn’t believe me that I captured it on video just to prove that it really is true.

Small child, you charm and amaze us every single day.  You are one smart and munchable little cookie.  If I had only known back then that Down syndrome would mean you.

ok, so I am not a speech therapist, but its seems to me Verity is doing great without one:o)  My little one who is one month older than Verity crawled over, fast as she could to listen when I first played the video (and then we watched it 3 more times, because she- and I- were so excited!!)

Oh, I love how you capture her adorable little self.  You “un-Down” Verity and make her just herself – and by doing so you also “un-Down” the rest.  Features become faces.  Thank you.

All I can see is a message that says “Http/1.1 Service Unavailable”   WAH!!!  I want to see and hear this little munchable cookie!!!!

  15. Joy says:

Ohhhhhhhhh!  I got to see!!  I’m SO glad!!

You know, it really is horrible teasing to only show an 11-second clip, Susanna!!!  Please know that we out here in blog land would LOVE to see any and all videos you’d like to share!!!  She is SOOOOOOOO precious!!!!!

  16. Well of course she can speak! LOL!! She’s been watching!! :o) LOL! I remember they told us our baby Joy at 5 months would not know her family from strangers, because there were 6 of us. They were wrong she knew a stranger when she saw one and she knew exactly who we were.
I am so loving watching Verity grow up! because we lost our baby Joy at 5 months. I celebrate every milestone beautiful Verity makes with great delight and joy, thinking of my Joy! Thank You for sharing her life with all of us. I will never have another daughter with DS. But I can have a Sister in Christ named Verity! (((HUGS)))

Well, look at – and listen to – Miss Smarty-Pants! She is just precious, and I love that sweet little enthusiastic voice. She is clearly very proud of herself, and rightfully so.

Verity’s going to have a lot to say, and I can’t wait to hear what it will be!

Amy (Smith), she IS doing so well, and we are eager to keep that good momentum going! We know that speech is inevitably a challenge for people with Down syndrome, and we want to know how to give her all the best help we can!

  30. Susanna says:

Shauna, she said “mama” first, months ago.

    :)

  31. Shauna says:

Lucky!  Reagan still won’t say it :P
