If you fail to plan…

July 16th, 2010

…you can say Happy Birthday this way instead of mailing a card a few days ago!

Happy 70th birthday, Dad!

When I contemplate all you got right as you and Mom worked to rear your nine children, so many examples come crowding into my mind.  God used you to give us what we could not possibly have obtained for ourselves.

~Your faithfulness and giftedness in teaching Biblical truth.  In challenging us to recognize how this truth is foundational under all of life.  How Biblical truth is not compartmentalized like folders in a filing cabinet to be consulted, or not, at will.

~Your diligence in training us in obedience and self-control from the time we were tiny tots.  In loving us too much to allow us to become addicted to the drug of having our own way.

~Your willingness to submit every part of your life to what God called you to do, even when you were criticized for it.  I know it was hard.  HARD.

But reading in II Corinthians 4 this morning, I saw the essence of your life.

“Therefore we do not lose heart.  Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.  For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.”

The older I get, the more profoundly grateful I am that God in His grace placed me under you for my early years.  And that you continue to have a godly influence in the lives of our children.

I honor you for living your life in the light of eternity.  Who knows how God will continue to use you in the generations to come?

Thank you…

and I love you…
